COLAB: Where Sustainability and Design Meet
Sancal, in collaboration with Lucas Muñoz Muñoz, presents COLAB, a project that merges sustainability and design on the fourth floor of the historic O’Donnell 34 building in Madrid. Conceived as a creative laboratory, this space redefines how renovations are approached while celebrating circularity through the reuse of materials and reassembly of elements. The result is a dynamic environment inviting exploration of innovative methodologies to reinterpret and transform architectural heritage.
Originally designed in 1966 by pioneering architect Antonio Lamela, the O’Donnell 34 building is a modernist landmark. Restoring and redefining a part of Spain’s first office building posed a significant challenge, requiring a unique approach. Esther and Elena Castaño-López, alongside Lucas Muñoz, embraced this responsibility with a vision to restore the space’s original essence, respecting its history and reusing waste generated during the renovation.
The work of Lucas Muñoz, spanning two decades of reinterpretations of objects and spaces, was pivotal to the success of COLAB. His contextual and multidisciplinary approach, combining design, sustainability, and materiality, is evident in the creation of furniture, lighting systems, and the rematerialization of construction remnants. These qualities, along with his holistic and experimental vision, aligned perfectly with the philosophy of Esther and Elena, resulting in a unique synergy for the project.
6 Walls: Documenting the Creative Process
The creation of COLAB is captured in the documentary «6 Walls», directed by Manu Toro with the collaboration of Lucas Muñoz. Premiering in the renovated space during the Madrid Design Festival, the film goes beyond technical details to explore the human dimension of the project. Through visuals that delve into material and creative processes, the documentary reflects on the challenges of reinterpreting architectural and artistic heritage, highlighting the contributions of Esther and Elena Castaño-López as well as Carlos Lamela.
«6 Walls» reveals how COLAB balances conservation and transformation in a continuous dialogue between past and future. Lucas Muñoz’s experimental approach was essential to this metamorphosis, which Manu Toro captured in striking visual detail, emphasizing the relationship between materiality, design, and the building’s history.
Experience and Discussion
The documentary’s premiere includes a discussion with the protagonists, followed by guided tours of the space, allowing the audience to experience firsthand how COLAB redefines the interaction between design, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
A Collaborative Legacy
With COLAB, Sancal and Lucas Muñoz have created more than just a physical space: they have brought to life a philosophy that integrates design, sustainability, and experimentation, redefining what it means to transform a place while preserving its essence.
