Materia Expandida es una escultura que investiga el encuentro entre dos materiales históricamente considerados opuestos: la hojalata, rígida, brillante y fría —asociada a lo industrial y a menudo entendida como un material humilde— y el mimbre (o la paja), cálido y orgánico, ligado a la artesanía y a lo rural.
Diseñada por Tomás Alía desde Estudio Caramba, la pieza plantea un diálogo contemporáneo en el que las comunidades artesanas del metal y de la fibra natural no solo se encuentran, sino que colaboran, se interrelacionan y se transforman mutuamente, generando un nuevo territorio común.
La obra se articula como un bosque escultórico construido en hoja de lata y mimbre: un paisaje simbólico donde lo duro y lo flexible, lo frío y lo cálido, conviven en equilibrio.
Este bosque representa una naturaleza cultural híbrida, nacida del cruce entre tradición, materia y diseño contemporáneo.

Materia Expandida habla del futuro de la artesanía de Castilla-La Mancha: una artesanía que no se encierra en la tradición, sino que se abre al presente, se contamina positivamente del diseño contemporáneo y se proyecta hacia nuevos usos y significados.
Materia Expandida is a sculpture that explores the encounter between two materials historically regarded as opposites: tinplate, rigid, shiny and cold—associated with industry and often perceived as a humble material—and wicker (or straw), warm and organic, traditionally linked to craftsmanship and the rural world.
Designed by Tomás Alía through Estudio Caramba, the piece proposes a contemporary dialogue in which artisan communities working with metal and natural fibers not only meet, but collaborate, interact and transform one another, generating a new shared territory.
The work takes shape as a sculptural forest built from tin sheets and wicker: a symbolic landscape where hard and flexible, cold and warm elements coexist in balance.
This forest represents a hybrid cultural nature, born from the intersection of tradition, material and contemporary design.
