In the painting Las Meninas, María Agustina Sarmiento de Sotomayor offers the Infanta Margarita a small porous clay jar, a type of búcaro from Mexico that was highly prized in the 16th and 17th centuries and used to cool water. This detail is a nod by Velázquez to Mexican culture, which the decor brand Huakal pays homage to in the exhibition Las Mexininas, bringing together seven artisans to create a free interpretation of the Spanish painter’s masterpiece.
This exhibition, celebrating the mutual influence between Mexico and Spain in art, is one of the initiatives proposed by Huakal, whose name, meaning «uniting voices» in Maya, refers to the community of artisans gathered in this space located in the heart of the Salamanca district.
The exhibition will take place at the Huakal space, located at 16 Claudio Coello Street. This project explores the dialogue between Spanish and Mexican cultures, highlighting their historical ties and the tradition of shared artisanal processes dating back to the early modern era.
The central theme of the exhibition is the reinterpretation of the figures of Las Meninas, iconic in Spanish art thanks to Velázquez. These creations have been transformed by artisans from the Huakal community, using various techniques that reflect their vision and craftsmanship.
