Taller: Creando un Futuro Sostenible con Biomateriales
En este taller, la bióloga y diseñadora Taryn Mead, profesora de la Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño de IE University, nos invita a explorar el concepto de «simbioceno», una era emergente donde las herramientas de la ecología, el diseño y la psicología nos ayudan a relacionarnos más profundamente con el mundo más allá de lo humano.
A través de actividades prácticas, como la creación de biomateriales y plásticos no tóxicos utilizando plantas, residuos alimentarios e ingredientes de cocina, exploraremos cómo nuestras elecciones materiales pueden fortalecer nuestra conexión con el entorno. Este taller ofrece una oportunidad única para aprender sobre biomateriales y experimentar de primera mano cómo construir un futuro más sostenible.

Sobre los Profesores
Taryn Mead
Profesora de la Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño de IE University, Mead se especializa en sostenibilidad, innovación y gestión. Su investigación abarca el diseño y desarrollo de productos sostenibles, sistemas de producción y consumo, economía circular y biomímesis. Amante de la innovación inspirada en la naturaleza, ha trabajado en proyectos nacionales e internacionales relacionados con el diseño de productos, ecosistemas industriales y ciudades planificadas para millones de habitantes.
Ainhoa Garmendia
Ingeniera de diseño de productos y profesora en IE University, es cofundadora de Mazedonia, un estudio centrado en investigación de materiales y reciclaje de plásticos. Ha trabajado en España, Italia, Portugal e Indonesia, colaborando con marcas como ECOALF, Patricia Urquiola, y Precious Plastic, entre otras. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en la Milano Design Week y la Triennale di Milano.
Inés Quezada
Diseñadora textil y profesora en IE University, especializada en tejido a máquina. Su trabajo explora la versatilidad de los textiles, aplicándolos en moda, iluminación, arte y arquitectura. Desarrolla proyectos que combinan técnicas tradicionales con nuevas tecnologías, desde piezas únicas en telar artesanal hasta colecciones para producción industrial.
Lorena Delgado
Coordinadora del Fab Lab en IE University, es arquitecta y diseñadora de tecnología en moda, especializada en fabricación de biomateriales. Ha impartido talleres sobre biomateriales y fabricación digital en instituciones como la UPM, la UPV y el IED Madrid, además de centros culturales como Medialab Matadero.
Susana Cámara
Investigadora y profesora en IE University, combina arte, ciencia y tecnología en proyectos colaborativos que involucran materiales, organismos vivos y sistemas. Licenciada en Bellas Artes por la UCM y con un máster en diseño por la Design Academy Eindhoven, su trabajo se desarrolla entre España, Holanda y Reino Unido.
Arantza Ozaeta
Arquitecta y profesora en IE University, dirige O.F. Architects, un estudio comprometido con la innovación y la investigación arquitectónica. Ozaeta estudió en la ETSAM y TU Delft, combinando su práctica profesional con la docencia en IE University y la ETSAM.
Raquel Buj
Fundadora de BUJ Studio, combina moda y arquitectura en piezas experimentales que mezclan artesanía y tecnología. Profesora en IE University, investiga materiales innovadores y técnicas multidisciplinarias para crear diseños únicos que cuestionan los límites entre disciplinas.
Workshop: Creating a Sustainable Future with Biomaterials
In this workshop, biologist and designer Taryn Mead, professor at the IE University School of Architecture and Design, invites us to explore the concept of the «Symbiocene,» an emerging era where the tools of ecology, design, and psychology help us deepen our connection to the world beyond the human.
Through hands-on activities, such as creating biomaterials and non-toxic plastics using plants, food waste, and kitchen ingredients, we will explore how our material choices can strengthen our relationship with the environment. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn about biomaterials and experience firsthand how to build a more sustainable future.

About the Professors
Taryn Mead
A professor at the IE University School of Architecture and Design, Mead specializes in sustainability, innovation, and management. Her research focuses on sustainable product design and development, production and consumption systems, circular economy, and biomimicry. Passionate about nature-inspired innovation, she has worked on national and international projects related to product design, industrial ecosystems, and cities planned for millions of inhabitants.
Ainhoa Garmendia
A product design engineer and professor at IE University, she is the co-founder of Mazedonia, a studio focused on material research and plastic recycling. She has worked across Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Indonesia, collaborating with brands such as ECOALF, Patricia Urquiola, and Precious Plastic, among others. Her work has been exhibited at Milano Design Week and the Triennale di Milano.
Inés Quezada
A textile designer and professor at IE University, specializing in machine knitting. Her work explores the versatility of textiles, applying them to fashion, lighting, art, and architecture. She develops projects that combine traditional techniques with new technologies, from unique handcrafted pieces on artisanal looms to collections for industrial production.
Lorena Delgado
The Fab Lab Coordinator at IE University, she is an architect and fashion technology designer specializing in biomaterials fabrication. She has conducted workshops on biomaterials and digital fabrication at institutions such as the UPM, UPV, and IED Madrid, as well as cultural centers like Medialab Matadero.
Susana Cámara
A researcher and professor at IE University, she combines art, science, and technology in collaborative projects involving materials, living organisms, and systems. A Fine Arts graduate from the UCM with a Master’s in Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven, her work spans Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK.
Arantza Ozaeta
An architect and professor at IE University, she directs O.F. Architects, a studio dedicated to innovation and architectural research. Ozaeta studied at ETSAM and TU Delft, balancing her professional practice with teaching at IE University and ETSAM.
Raquel Buj
Founder of BUJ Studio, she combines fashion and architecture in experimental pieces that blend craftsmanship and technology. A professor at IE University, she explores innovative materials and multidisciplinary techniques to create unique designs that challenge the boundaries between disciplines.
